When it comes to your smile, your oral health tools are an important asset to help keep your smile healthy. So, when preparing your assault on plaque buildup and the cavity wars this halloween, make sure you are properly equipped. Even the greatest of brushstrokes can be nullified by worn bristles, or contaminated brush heads. Below is a list of proper techniques for cleaning and caring for your toothbrush:

– Store your toothbrush upright.
– Keep your toothbrush clean when not in use.
– Keep your toothbrush aired out; do not consistently store them in closed containers.
– Look for toothbrushes that have the ADA Seal of Acceptance. Also look for ADA-approved fluoride toothpaste.
– Don’t share toothbrushes.
– Be gentle and don’t press hard. A softer, gentler approach works best.
– Avoid cross-contamination from toothbrushes touching each other.
– Visit your dentist every six months for an oral exam and professional cleaning.
– Electric toothbrushes make brushing easier.
– Use a toothbrush that easily fits into your mouth.
– Replace your toothbrush every 3-4 months. Youth toothbrushes typically need to be replaced more often than adult toothbrushes.
– Make sure the size and shape of your brush can reach all areas in your mouth effectively.
– Stiff bristles can hurt gums, softer brushes are better.
