Your child deserves a top-notch smile and oral health, and it’s your job as a parent to keep their little chompers and gums in tip-top shape. Now, this might seem like an overwhelming task, especially if you’re not sure what to do, but our dentist, Dr. Neal Smith, is happy to help you by giving you some tips.

First, start brushing your child’s teeth when their first tooth erupts from the gums. As you brush, use a child-sized toothbrush that has soft bristles. The bristles will care for and clean the teeth and gums. Also, use toothpaste that doesn’t have fluoride and is safe to swallow. If you don’t have access to this toothpaste, just use water as you brush.

Second, let your child use fluoride toothpaste once they turn 2 years old. At this age, your child’s little teeth should be able to handle the fluoride and your child will likely know not to swallow the paste.

Third, make brushing a family activity. When your child needs to brush, have the whole family brush as well. This can help your child understand that oral hygiene is important for everyone and it can even teach your child how to properly scrub the teeth.
